Mikel was a research scientist at FAIR (Meta AI). He obtained his PhD at the University of the Basque Country in 2020, and interned at DeepMind, FAIR, and Google. Mikel has done pioneering work in multilingual NLP, including the co-invention of unsupervised machine translation, and has been involved in major language modeling efforts at FAIR such as OPT and XGLM.
Mikel’s work has been distinguished with the 2020 EurAI dissertation award, the SCIE-FBBVA 2020 award, and the CoNLL 2018 best paper award, among others.
